Here’s another endorsement for my Super Habits book that I’d like to share.
Kathleen McLaughlin is Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at Walmart and also President of the Walmart Foundation. She wrote:
“This highly engaging and practical book provides sustenance for the soul. Melding wisdom drawn from philosophers, sages, and scientists with page-turning stories of everyday people overcoming extraordinary odds, Super Habits is a guidebook for all of us to grow and thrive in fulfilling our life’s purpose.”
Thank you Kathleen!
Continuing yesterday’s brief overview of the book, here are chapters six to nine, and some of the stories they recount.
Chapter 6: Forgiveness is the superhabit for letting go of actual or perceived offenses received. Where Gentlefirmness is the superhabit for dealing with anger in the moment, Forgiveness is for dealing with it afterwards, to prevent it from eating you up inside. The My Lai story continues here, and I also tell about a leadership tragedy where a submarine accidentally sunk a school ship, drowning several school children and their teachers, and how the superhabit of Forgiveness might have prevented that.
Chapter 7: Orderliness is the superhabit for channelling your desires for what to do next into a productive structure. I tell the story of the young man who struggled with a serious learning disability and went on to develop one of the most popular methods around for organizing work.
Chapter 8. Eutrapelia is a greek word for the superhabit of having good leisure. In this chapter I show its importance, what kind of leisure is good for you, or bad for you, and how to tell the difference. Stories of an 18th Century English prankster show how badly things can go wrong when you don’t have this difference clearly in mind.
In Chapter 9, I explain the entire Superhabits system. I show how the medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas was the first to bring all the ancient virtues together and organize them into a system, which allows you to figure out which superhabit will have the most positive impact on your life right now.
More tomorrow.
